What is it….
- Pamper and treat yourself?
- Relax and eat anything you want?
These are limited and diminished definitions of self-care that we often hear. However, self-care can be so much more when we understand our own needs, wants and purpose.
Of course, relaxing feels good and is needed. However, if that’s all we do to take care of ourselves relaxation can lose its healing power and purpose. We have many different needs and wants in multiple areas of our lives. Looking at one single aspect of ourselves to rejuvenate and energize our whole self comes up lacking.
Each individual needs to have multiple outlets for self-care, a list of go-to things that can be used to keep it fresh and empowering. To help create that list we must look at the needs, wants, and purpose in the following areas of life:
- Physical
- Emotional
- Personal
- Social
- Spiritual
- Practical
Ask yourself: What do you want these areas to look like and to feel like? What is most important to you and what can you do to improve these areas and feel more balanced?
From this process we can start to see what we can do to take care of our whole selves. By proactively addressing all the pieces of yourself, you’re on your way to wellness.
Making life changes can be hard. Despite the challenges and the barriers, you deserve to be well. Being well is a process that takes time, effort, and self-compassion.
Know that you are worth it!
