Improving the Behaviors of Strong Willed Children (Without Crushing Their Spirit)

As a child care professional, you’ve no doubt run into a strong-willed child who has made your job incredibly challenging. Spending time with a strong-willed child each day is emotionally and intellectually draining as it is common for most interactions to become argumentative and many of the traditional techniques for behavior modification prove to be unsuccessful with this type of personality.

In this presentation, child care professionals will learn how to change the interaction pattern they have with strong-willed children, from a traditional one-size-fits-all approach to a more personalized approached tailored to meet the strong-willed personality. They will leave with specific techniques they can use immediately with strong-willed children in their program to decrease power struggles and encourage cooperation, without destroying the child’s spirit in the process.

Objectives

After completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the personality characteristics of the strong-willed personality
  • Understand the cause of the strong-willed personality
  • Identify specific, non-punitive techniques to utilize in interactions with strong-willed children that will encourage cooperation without destroying the child’s spirit, and
  • Understand ways to communicate and collaborate with parents of strong-willed children to create a positive caregiving relationship

Presentation length is 2 hours and meets criteria for the Guidance and Behavior Management training category established by the South Dakota Division of Child Care Services.

A certificate of attendance is provided to each participant upon the completion of the presentation. Participants are responsible for tracking and submitting their own training hours to the appropriate regulatory agency.

If you provide child care in a state other than South Dakota, please contact me to learn how to receive approval for this training opportunity from your state’s child care licensing board.
